Virgie and Addie Savage

Virgie Ethel (1898-1976), Addie Viola (1888-1975), and their brother, Albert Monroe Savage (1892-1963), were the children of Hiram Frank Savage (1865-1934) and Serena Graham Savage (1865-1956).[1]

Hiram, a farmer and Oregon native, and Serena, from Missouri, married in Montague, Texas, in 1885.[2] Sometime before 1900, they relocated with their small family from Texas to the Oklahoma Territory, where Virgie was born.[3]  The family settled in Tillman County and remained in Oklahoma for the rest of their lives.

At age 16, Addie married James “Jim” Nelson Van Bebber, Jr. (1884-1933).[4] The couple had a son, Herman, and worked a small farm. In 1940, five years after Jim’s death, Addie married a second time to former Tennessean and WWI veteran, Charles W. Horton (1890-1979).[5]

Virgie was also just 16 when she married.[6]  Her husband, Carl Duggins (1891-1955), was born in Kentucky and raised in Oklahoma. Virgie and Carl had six children together – Preston, who died in his teens; Garland; Cecil; Earl; Carl, Jr.; and a daughter, Shirley.[7]  Garland, Cecil, Earl and Carl served in WWII.
