Nellie M. Rowell (1865-1933) was one of nine children of Guy Eldredge Rowell (1818-1897) and Betsey Gordon Page Rowell (1826-1892) of Barton, Vermont[1]. Guy Rowell, a farmer, was appointed postmaster of nearby East Albany in 1861[2]. Nearly forty years later, The Burlington Free Press (Burlington, Vermont) memorialized him as “a generous man and a good citizen.”

Nellie spent most of her early life in and around Albany and Barton. She was among the top ten students of Barton high school’s graduating class of 1883. The same year, her younger brother, Guy, Jr., won a prize for his own scholarly achievements[3].

In 1894, Nellie married New Hampshire native, Edward C. Gould (1862-1933)[4]. He was a son of Gilbert D. Gould (1816-1891) and Elizabeth Neal Gould (1828-1913)[5].

Nellie and Edward lived in Manchester, New Hampshire, where Edward sold bicycles. He later worked as a hardware salesman and store manager[6]. Census records do not indicate that Nellie and Edward had any children. By 1920, they shared their home with Edward’s 26-year-old nephew, Frederick Gould (1893-1971)[7].

The Goulds seem to have enjoyed a quiet, fulfilled life together. They died a few short months apart, and were laid to rest in Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester.
