Clarence Marion Buchanan
Clarence was born December 21, 1880, in Iowa Co., Iowa, to Thomas Hamilton Buchanan (1846-1929) and Rosa Alice White Buchanan (1849-1946). He married Florence Neel (1882-1965) on July 29, 1903. She was the daughter of Iowa residents, George Samuel Neel (1842-1931) and Minerva Ann Glass Neel (1843-1936).
According to the U.S. Census of 1910, Clarence and Florence lived in Jackson, Missouri, where Clarence was an insurance agent and Florence was a housewife. The couple appears to have had a son, Thomas Hamilton Buchanan, who was born February 27, 1911, and died shortly afterwards. Their daughter, Phyllis Buchanan, was born a year or two later. By 1920, Clarence and Florence had relocated to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Clarence worked as an insurance adjuster. The U.S. Census of 1930 shows the family living in Lakewood, Colorado, where Clarence was employed as a salesman and Phyllis headlined as a professional golfer.
Phyllis Buchanan began her golf career at 16 and won five consecutive Colorado women’s golf championships before retiring from the sport in 1939. During World War II, she joined the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Women’s Reserve (known as SPARS), and played on the organization’s golf team. In 1979, she was inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame.
Clarence Buchanan’s death date is unknown, but he and Florence are buried at Golden Hill Cemetery in Lakewood. Phyllis died in 1984. Her burial place is unknown.
